If you were thinking about doing a basement renovation on your home, then consider this blog your sign to get started on it this year with CHART! Not only do well-done basement renovations have the potential to significantly increase the value of your property, but they are also invaluable when it comes to giving your family more space. We have some pretty creative clients that are awesome at working with our team to design their own version of an ideal basement. That being said, there are also some pretty common threads and elements that we see in regards to what our clients are hoping to get out of their basement renovation projects. We thought it might be nice to share some of the most popular basement renovation ideas and motivations if you are looking for some inspiration. We’ve included pictures of just some of the many basement remodelling projects we have completed over these 40 years to help you visualize what your space could look like. Here are some of the most common things we add to our client’s basement renovation projects.
#1: Extra Bedroom
There are many reasons to add an additional bedroom to your home including a growing family, caring for an elderly loved one, providing a comfortable guest room, or even just the need for more space. Don’t settle for a dark or gloomy room! We like to add plenty of overhead lighting on dimmers to our clients’ basement bedrooms to create a more welcome and tranquil environment. We also recommend using light, bright, and upbeat colours that style work with the rest of your design taste.
#2: Family Room
This addition is up there with the most common reasons our clients choose to renovate their basements. Adding an extra gathering space is becoming more and more sought after, and for good reason. We can make your basement the new movie watching spot, game night area, entertaining space, and more by adding a family or living room to your basement. We suggest going for an open concept living room or family room to combat any low ceilings or cave vibes that your basement currently has.
#3: Basement Bar
This type of basement remodel is also becoming more and more popular with our clients who love to entertain and host guests. If you want your basement to be the hangout spot or the place to unwind after the workweek, a basement bar is the perfect solution for you. This new space will not only mean less going up and down the stairs for drinks but will also potentially increase the resale value of your home when it comes time to sell.
#4: Additional Bathroom
Sick of fighting over the shower or counter space with your family? Add a new bathroom to your basement remodelling plans. Similar to the desire to want to add another bedroom to your home, adding another bathroom is great for growing families or entertaining. This addition can act as your new guest bathroom or help accompany a new bedroom downstairs to make sure everyone has enough space every morning. Again, proper lighting and wall colour are both key to making your basement bathroom feel as welcoming and spacious as possible.
#5: Home Gym
In 2020 this one was huge and still continues to be going into 2021! If you want your own space to exercise without actually having to leave the comfort of your home, then a basement home-gym is definitely for you. Let the CHART team renovate your space so that you can actually get excited about spending time in your new gym. We can help you design a space for all of your family’s fitness routines so that you get the most use out of this space as possible.
#6: Kids Zone
Tired of your kids’ toys, games, or schoolwork being all over the house? We recommend putting in some sort of playroom or kid zone into your basement plans so that everything can be in one spot and away from the rest of your house. Having this space will come in handy as your family grows up and their needs change because you can always swap out the toys for other activities as you see fit. The added privacy and hangout room is also great for entertaining.
#7: Utility Room / Storage
This one is perfect for you if you are constantly wishing you had more space to get some of your household chores done. We can add utility rooms, mudrooms, laundry rooms, or even just a storage centre so that you have a space specifically designated to getting all of your chores done efficiently and without distractions. Like adding a kid zone to your basement, a utility room is a great option for moving unwanted items away from the rest of your home and creating more usable space.
#8: Man or Woman Cave
Everyone deserves a space to call their own while at home. For some, this is often their bedrooms but sometimes or for some families this just does not cut it. Perhaps you need a quiet place to work, watch some TV, display your collectables, or just take a break from the hustle and bustle of your home. A cave of some sort is the ideal option for any family looking for a multi-purpose interior space separate from the rest of your property.
