Top 5 Reasons Our Clients Build Home Additions
If your household is growing and you find yourself constantly wishing you had more space, you have two options: build an extension onto your home or move. We have a lot of clients that love their existing property and neighbourhood so much that moving just doesn’t make sense. This means that our team has done plenty of home additions to create more room for our clients’ various needs. We’re here to make sure you don’t have to move your family into a larger home and can instead improve your treasured space. In today’s blog, we want to highlight some of the best and most common reasons our clients choose to build a home extension, whether it be a storey addition, rear extension, or basement underpinning.
Create More Common Space
If you find yourself constantly stepping on your family member’s toes, arguing over seating space, or fighting for the remote, adding more interior common space is your solution. Most older homes do not prioritize open-concept floor plans so you may be living in a home with multiple small rooms that do not suit your family’s needs. You can do a family room addition or finish your basement to create multipurpose rooms that provide enough space for everyone to relax and spend time together. Finishing your basement or adding another storey allows for additional living space away from the rest of the house. If you have an expanding family, this is also a great option because you will need more storage to accommodate everyone. We often recommend including an additional entryway or mudroom with built in storage or closet for even more added storage space. If your kids are growing up and needing more privacy, giving them additional hangout space above or below your current living room and bedrooms is also a great option.
Add Another Bedroom
Does your family have a new baby on the way, aging parents moving in with you, or growing kids who can no longer share rooms? Adding an additional bedroom or two is most likely what your family needs. Adding bedrooms is one of the more popular reasons to do a home addition and there are multiple ways to do so. A lot of our clients are asking our team to build above their garage to add a master bedroom, ensuite bath, and closet. This allows them to not have to lose any yard space and or add a foundation to their home. Adding a second storey or opting for a rear extension are some of the other more common ways we can add bedrooms when your home is already at maximum capacity. Creating a new master bedroom and bath means you can repurpose your old bedroom while creating more separation, privacy, and space for your added personal comfort.
Expand Your Kitchen Space
Doing a kitchen update is one of our most popular remodeling projects because it is often the most used room in the house. If you find yourself constantly asking people to back up or away from the oven when you open it, it’s probably time to add some more space. The classic phrase “too many cooks in the kitchen” can be easily solved by creating enough space to accommodate as many chefs and cleaners in your cooking space as necessary. Older kitchens are not designed for the whole family to be involved in the cooking and cleaning process, so we are always adding space for a more open-concept, chef’s kitchen area with enough room for the whole family. We often have clients who have older, smaller kitchens that are lacking some sort of formal dining area. Our team usually recommend a lateral or rear extension for this problem because it creates extra space on your main floor so your dining area can be nearby or attached to your kitchen.
Add More Entertaining Areas
Another reason our clients opt for home additions is the need for more space to entertain and host guests. If having space where people can gather is a top priority for you, let us help create more room for your entertaining needs. A basement renovation or rear expansion are great for creating large, open areas that can accommodate media or game equipment, plenty of seating area, and dining setups. Our process always begins by asking our clients to make a list of the hobbies or activities you want to take place in your home addition. This way we can configure your new space so that you have plenty of room for necessary seating, activity areas, and furnishings you plan to use in it.
Create Additional Indoor-Outdoor Space
We have a lot of clients that wish they could spend more time outdoors throughout the year, but our Canadian weather makes it challenging. Even though they have beautiful decks, patios, porches, and lawns, these clients only get to enjoy them in warmer weather. We recommend incorporating a sunroom or covered deck, patio, or porch to your space for the perfect solution to outdoor living all year long. These additions will extend the summer season in your space and provide the best spots for relaxing with your family or entertaining guests. We can also work with you to outline exactly what your home’s exterior and outdoor space is missing so we can incorporate them into our building plan. We have clients who have added an outdoor kitchen area, a fireplace, dining setups, large group seating, and as much natural light as possible to brighten their homes.
